The Suffolk County Supreme Court holds jurisdiction over various types of civil cases involving claims for money damages exceeding $25,000. Its caseload includes tort claims, personal injury claims, contract disputes, and real property matters, including actions in ejectment. It also hears cases where a party seeks to enjoin or stop certain actions by another party. The Suffolk County Supreme Court is also the court with jurisdiction for Suffolk County, NY residents to address matters related to the termination of a marriage, including separation, annulment, and divorce.
The Suffolk County Supreme Court is divided into 3 different locations. Matrimonial and Guardianship proceedings take place predominately in the Central Islip location. There is also a Suffolk County Supreme Clerk’swindow for civil filings in Central Islip, as well as some additional civil courtrooms. But predominantly all civil matters are heard in one of the two functioning Riverhead courthouses.

The Jon. Alan D. Oshrin Supreme Court courthouse located at 1 Court Street in Riverhead, New York is the newest courthouse. This location hears a majority of the Suffolk Supreme Court civil claims, and houses the Suffolk County Supreme Court clerk’s office for the filing of papers.Â

The Arthur M. Cromarty Court Building is located on the south side of the river from the main courthouse, next to the Suffolk county jail. This building hears criminal cases as well as some Supreme Court civil matters.Â

The Suffolk County Supreme Court, Central Islip location hears all matrimonial and guardianship proceedings. A Suffolk County Clerk’s Office can also be found in this building.Â
This Supreme Court building is also physically attached to the John P. Cohalan Jr. Court Complex, which primarily hears criminal matters.Â
The entrance for the civil court is to the left, and separate from the criminal court entrance.Â
